About The Film

A heartwarming, joyous, and uplifting dramedy about the misadventures of a Buenos Aires rabbi who borrowed large sums of money to help his synagogue continue to serve the needy. Now years later, the unpaid debt has finally caught up with him, as a moneylender demands full repayment or he will seize the synagogue property. As a last-ditch, desperate attempt, he travels to Taiwan in search of unlikely donors to secure the synagogue's debts that will save his community. What follows is a journey that leads to unexpected financing and transcendence—a story that imparts the values of community spirit, family, and hope.

Special Event (via Zoom)

VIRTUAL HAPPY HOUR: Cocktail-Making + Conversation,  Thurs, July 2 at 5pm

Belly up to the festival's virtual bar (a.k.a. your home bar) with Brooklyn mixologist Aaron Goldfarb and author of Gather Around Cocktails. Aaron will teach Zoom participants how to make tonight's signature "Silver Shalom" cocktail for our "it's 5 pm in Seattle" sendoff. Aaron will answer questions and talk about "Jewish spirits." Gather 'round for a conversation + cocktail making, before watching our final film feelin' good!

A take-off on The Last Word, a gin-based cocktail popularized in modern times at Seattle's Zig Zag Cafe, this variant swaps in Aperol instead of Maraschino liqueur.

3/4 ounce gin (the Seattle-based Big Gin is a good option)
3/4 ounce green Chartreuse
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce Aperol (feel free to use any red bitter liqueur you prefer)

Add ingredients to shaker with ice. Shake and strain into chilled couple or cocktail glass. No garnish.

Aaron Goldfarb Portrait web Aaron Goldfarb's most recent book is Gather Around Cocktails:  Drinks to Celebrate Usual and Unusual Holidays, featuring cocktail recipes for Jewish holidays such as Hanukkah, Purim, and Passover. His 2018 book Hacking Whiskey:  Smoking, Blending, Fat-Washing, and Other Whiskey Experiments was a Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards finalist. He has written 3 novels, a short story collection, and a book of essays. He lives in Brooklyn with his family and writes for Esquire, PUNCH, VinePair, and Whisky Advocate among others.
