Created by Sayed Kashua, a 32-year-old Israeli-born Palestinian journalist, Arab Labor (in Hebrew avoda aravit, which colloquially means "shoddy or second-rate work") focuses on Amjad, a Palestinian journalist and Israeli citizen in search of acceptance into Israeli society. Married to Bushara, a social worker, and father to Maya, Amjad is an Israeli, yet his car is searched everyday when he drives from his neighborhood to his job in Jerusalem. Amjad's only ally is his friend Meir, an Israeli Jew and photographer who works with him at the newspaper. While poking fun at the cultural divide, the series explores the daily conflicts that Arabs face between the desire to integrate into Israeli society and their own values and traditions. A milestone on Israeli TV as the first program to present Palestinian characters speaking Arabic on primetime. Winner, Best Israeli TV Series at the Jerusalem International Film Festival 2008.
