Can the universal struggle for weight loss advance peace in the Middle East? That is the question posed by filmmaker Yael Luttwak in this clever and illuminating documentary. When the peace process breaks down in 2000, Luttwak organizes a group of 14 disparate women - secular urban Israelis, religious Jewish settlers, Bedouin Arabs, Palestinians, young and not-so-young, well-off and less-so - to form a weight loss group in Jerusalem. In their first encounter, the discomfort among the women is palpable. But as the pounds melt away, so too does their mistrust and friendships emerge despite strong personalities and geopolitics.
