Eyal Halfon's gritty film begins with the disorienting escape from border patrol agents by smuggled Soviet laborers. An ambitious, multilayered ensemble cast stars Evelyne Kaplun (Yana's Friends, SJFF 2000 and Syrian Bride, SJFF 2006) who portrays Jana, a Ukranian immigrant trying to earn money for her daughter back home, with timid grace. Winner of Israel's Academy Award for Best Feature Film (2005) and Israel's official submission to the 2006 Oscars™, What a Wonderful Place is both harrowing character study and hard-hitting look at the changing face of Israeli culture and status of illegal workers in the Holy Land.
