An Act of Defiance

Tuesday, March 13, 2018 | 08:30PM - 10:34PM |SIFF Cinema Uptown

About the Film:

South Africa, 1963. Ten men in Nelson Mandela’s inner circle—some black, some Jewish—are arrested for conspiring to commit sabotage against the apartheid state and its government. They face a possible death sentence for conspiracy in a corrupt and grossly unjust political system. Bram Fischer (exceptionally played by Peter Paul Muller), their courageous and sympathetic lawyer, risks his career and freedom to defend these men, while attempting to hide the fact that he, too, frequented the farm where they convened and plotted. Dutch filmmaker Jean van de Velde (THE SILENT ARMY) captures a dark period in South Africa's recent history, skillfully balancing a nail-biting political thriller with spectacular courtroom intrigue while paying tribute to the legendary figures that fought to end segregation and corruption in their country.
