L’CHAYIM
COMRADE STALIN
Twenty years
before the birth of the modern state of Israel, Stalin decided to
establish the Jewish Autonomous Region of Birobidzhan in the Soviet
Union's Far East. Heeding the slogan “To a Jewish land!”, Jews from the
USSR, as well as Canada, the United States, Poland, France and Argentina,
among others, made the arduous trek, by boat and train, to southeastern
Siberia. What compelled them? And what was life like for these
extraordinary pioneers? Accompanied by an affable but obliviously
anti-Semitic guide, musician and filmmaker Yale Strom takes a seven-day
trip, via the Trans-Siberian Railroad, to find out. What results is a
fascinating journey to “the first Jewish state”.
