DIVINE INTERVENTION Elia Suleiman is perhaps the most important filmmaker in the Arab world today, making him an artist whom Israeli Jews, and the world at large, must grapple with. Divine Intervention, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, has already provoked impassioned discussion around the world. Now it is our turn. As Leslie Camhi writes in The NY Times, the film is "a series of elegant, barbed gags, distilling the frustration, rage and hopelessness of contemporary Palestinian existence into a wry burlesque. Imagine Jacques Tati stumbling, with impeccable comic timing, across the potholes of the Middle East. Mr. Suleiman manages to infuse the region's dark conflicts with a gleeful absurdism." A challenging, cutting fantasy, Divine Intervention is a work of art that should not be ignored. Special guests: Kathleen Murphy (film critic and teacher) and Deborah Rosen (immediate past president, AJC Seattle) France, Morocco, Germany, Palestinian Territories 2002, 100 min.
