Divided We Fall

This black, wickedly funny study in moral absurdity was a 2001 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film.  In a small Czech village during World War II, a childless couple, Josef and Marie Cizek, hide their former neighbor, a young Jewish man who has managed to escape from the death camps but has lost his entire family. Their other neighbor, Horst, now an enthusiastic Nazi collaborator, drops by at odd hours and begins to suspect. The collaborator's German boss, shattered by the death of his young sons in the war, announces that he is moving into the couple's spare room, and to keep him out Marie blurts out that she is with child and saving the room for a nursery.  Trouble is, she is not pregnant but needs to be and the only candidates are her sterile husband, the Nazi follower, or the hidden Jew.  Scoundrel, ordinary sinner, and hero all rub shoulders--and sometimes overlap--in this comedic and poignant tale of human strength and frailty.

Community FILMTalks!  Following the film, there will be a facilitated town-hall meeting, led by Bill Grace, Executive Director of the Center for Ethical Leadership.
