Purim
Two
days from now, on Tuesday, March 21st, the joyous holiday of
Purim begins. Based on the
story of Queen Esther who disguised herself in order to save the Persian
Jews from the evil hands of King Haman, children are encouraged to
celebrate in costume. Purim, the
film, captures an unusual portrait of Hasidic children in Boro Park,
Brooklyn, who really do it up on this topsy-turvy day: boys dress as girls
and vice versa; young dress as old; sacred objects come to life;
secular Halloween costumes surface; and mock kings and queens parade
in the streets.
