The
Personals: Improvisations on Romance in the Golden Years
Director
Keiko Ibi a Japanese girl from Tokyo and NYU film student
surprised everyone when she won the Academy Award for Best Short
Documentary for The Personals. Her portrayal of the Alliance Stage Company, a Jewish senior
citizens theatre group on New Yorks Lower East Side, is candid,
humorous and touching. The film goes behind the scenes as they rehearse a
play based on personal
ads theyve written about their best assets and ideal mates.
On and offstage, the actors address issues facing older people,
such as loneliness, failing health and financial insecurity. Their longing
for love, sex and companionship imbues their theatrical undertakings and
drives their zest for an inspired life in the Golden Years.
